The Tarabitan village is the largest village, compared to our expedition locations in North Minahasa. This village is also located on a hillside, and uniquely close to the mangrove forest. Tarabitan is strategically located on the main district road that makes it arguably the easiest to reach with public transport, compared to Bahoi and Bulutui. This village is also already having its own POKMASWAS and also a unique spirulina farming activity.
In this village, YAPEKA and JBS are also heavily involved with the local POKMASWAS group in increasing their capacity as a conservation group and collaborating together in educating the local community in the importance of natural conservation. Currently, we are also working together with POKMASWAS in almost all of our conservation related activities such as seagrass monitoring and BRUV surveys.
In Tarabitan, YAPEKA and JBS – supported by the UNEP – are initiating the development of community based spirulina (a very useful microalgae) farms that will help in providing the local community with alternative livelihood. The business model that we implement in the community based spirulina farms ensuring that some of the profit from the spirulina sales will be reinvested to the conservation effort.
Bulutui is picturesque North Minahasa village, and a former a blast-fishing hotspot. Work with YAPEKA and JBS to support octopus and other community fisher groups to further their development of sustainable fisheries and establish community patrols.
Bahoi is a small village in North Sulawesi, renowned for its Marine Protected Area. Work with the community to strengthen local understanding of conservation benefits, and help monitor seagrass health and the local dugong population.
