Cultivated worldwide, spirulina is an edible blue-green algae that is used as a dietary supplement or whole food. Spirulina is also used as a feed supplement in the aquaculture, aquarium, and poultry industries.
The Tarabitan Spirulina Group is a newly formed local community group that is building a spirulina farm at Tarabitan, in Sulawesi’s North Minahasa province.
Supported by YAPEKA with assistance from NIRAS and UNEP, the Tarabitan Spirulina Group is mobilising to build competence in all aspects of a spirulina business including:
- Spirulina propagation
- Farm management
- Harvesting
- Processing and packaging
- Marketing the finished product.
As a Wallacea Expeditioner, you will be able to visit with the group and perhaps contribute your expertise to their success.
The Tarabitan Spirulina Group aims to build a sustainable business that will provide a focal point for economic development in Tarabitan, both as a new industry, and as a local tourist attraction.
