Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS) are a powerful tool to explore marine underwater environments. These advanced camera method use bait to attract a range of marine species, capturing high-quality footage of underwater life in both shallow and deep waters. Whether investigating coastal reefs or hard-to-reach shoals, BRUVS provide an excellent way to document and study marine biodiversity in its natural setting.
The stationary cameras are set up on the seafloor with bait designed to lure fish and other marine creatures. This method allows detailed observations of underwater species without disturbing their natural behavior. The footage collected by BRUVS is then analyzed by expertise to identify species and measure their abundance, offering valuable insights into marine ecosystems.
BRUVS also provide significant research benefits. They enable precise measurements of fish size and biomass, capture detailed images of various habitats, and record large, mobile animals that typically evade other methods. By using BRUVS, researchers can track changes in marine populations over time, helping to assess the impacts of environmental changes and human activities on marine life.
